The Role of Prebiotics in Pet Nutrition
The balance of the intestinal flora is now recognized as one of the most important elements for the health of dogs and cats.
Prebiotics play a gentle yet decisive role in promoting a balanced gut microbiota, with tangible benefits for the intestines, coat, and immune system.
Within our Naxos formulations, the inclusion of foods naturally rich in FOS and MOS prebiotics helps to enhance these functions.
Let’s take a closer look at how these ingredients work in your pet’s diet and the concrete results they can offer.
Benefits for the Intestine, Coat, and Immune System
Intestinal Function and Microbiota
Prebiotics such as fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) are non-digestible fibers that reach the large intestine intact. There, they serve as nourishment for beneficial microbes (for example, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria), promoting their growth and metabolic activity.
Through fermentation, these microbes produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which help maintain a favorable pH and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
A healthy microbiota means better intestinal regularity, reduced intestinal mucosa permeability, and good absorption of nutrients present in high-quality pet food.
Effects on the Immune System
The intestinal tract is closely connected to the immune system: a healthy intestinal flora stimulates the production of immunoglobulins, modulates immune cells, and protects the body. Prebiotics act indirectly, supporting beneficial bacteria that, in turn, strengthen immune defenses.
Moreover, MOS can hinder the adhesion of pathogenic microorganisms to the intestinal wall, helping to reduce gastrointestinal infections.
Improvement of Coat and Overall Condition
When nutrient absorption is efficient and inflammation is under control, the skin and coat also benefit. A healthy intestine supports the metabolism of fats, vitamins, and essential acids that promote shine, strength, and coat integrity.
In practice, the regular use of foods containing prebiotics can also contribute to a shinier coat and balanced skin condition.
Which Prebiotics We Use in Naxos Products
Functional Ingredients with Prebiotic Effect
In our formulations, we have included yeast extract, chicory extract, and durum wheat germ. These ingredients have a functional effect without the addition of chemical substances.
- Yeast extract provides MOS, typical of yeasts.
- Chicory extract is rich in fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS).
- Durum wheat germ is included in the Naxos Wellness line as an ingredient with prebiotic properties.
We emphasize that rosemary is our only natural preservative, and we do not use GMOs or artificial preservatives.
Advantages of Our Approach
This selection allows the microbiota to be modulated naturally and gradually, reducing the risk of digestive disorders in sensitive animals.
By acting through non-digestible fibers that are fermentable only by beneficial bacteria, prebiotics promote intestinal conditions unfavorable to pathogens.
Furthermore, in the Naxos Monoprotein line, each recipe contains a single animal protein source and ingredients with prebiotic effects, minimizing the risk of adverse reactions.
Examples of Naxos Products with Added Prebiotics
For dogs, we can mention Naxos Medium-Maxi Mature Lamb and Citrus, a food designed for older dogs with high nutritional value. We use a single Italian protein source, gluten-free cereals, and no soy, corn, or artificial preservatives.
For cats, we highlight Naxos Kitten Mousse Monoprotein Blue Fish, a soft-textured wet food suitable for kittens from 6 weeks to 12 months. It contains 94% blue fish, enriched with pomegranate, spirulina algae, and salmon oil, and is naturally formulated without artificial additives.
Thanks to the presence of elements naturally rich in FOS and MOS, these recipes combine intestinal health, immune support, and coat well-being.
